Open Competition or Other Castes

Before reading this, please read Sivabalan's Blog and Kuzhali's Blog and also March of LawPlease note that seats are not being added in Tamil Nadu with regard to the 69% reservation. We have a very beautiful way

May be this post will help you
http://nellaimedicos.org/bruno/2006/05/30/69-reservation-in-tamil-nadu/

What UPSC is at present doing is wrong,
but I feel that the present system is actually a little advantageous... and there are few hidden benefits here......

That is they are giving the preference of getting a seat in either Open Quota or in one of the reserved category.

The only problem is that the candidates should be exposed to the intricacies of this system.

In Tamil Nadu Post Graduate Medical Entrance Exam, for example, a candidate can choose a seat under 4 quotas

1. Open
2. Service
3. BC
4. BC Service

(this is a much more complicated system than the two options
1. OC
2. BC
or
1. Open
2. Service)

As some one dealing with this system for a long time, though it leads to less number of seats (Quanity) the BC andMBC get Good Seats (Quality)

Assume there are 300 vacancies for UPSC Civil Services (100 IAS. 100 IPS and 100 IFS)
Imagine only SC reservation of 15 %
For example, if this system is not in place, we may have more than 45 IFS Officers
Because of this system we have 15 IAS, 15 IPS and 15 IFS officers from SC Candidates
(This numerical data is for easy understanding only)

Because

If ALL the students are automatically enrolled in the reserved category, the Open Competition becomes other castes (that is what happening in UPSC at present) This is a wrong method

Also note that
If ALL the students who get a rank in the general rank list for the open seats are automatically brought into Open Category, then a student may not get a seat of his choice. This happened (by mistake)in TNPSC 1999. Since TNPSC Followed a rolling roster, BC Students who got more marks and qualified in the Open Quota were called for counselling LATER than BC Students who get less marks, but got to the first in the BC list. When counselling was called for in the order of 1 OC, 1 BC, 1 MBC and 1 SC, the student who got less marks and was first in the list got a good option, where as one (BC) who got better marks but was in the last place in OC list was made to compete with the BC student who was last in the BC List. This mistake was pointed out and it was rectified (I did not suffer when I got selected in TNPSC 2003) At present they follow the 100 point rolling roster at the time of appointment and allot a permanent seniority number which is the BEST System. I will explain this method (100 point rolling roster) later in another post

Of course, if UPSC Can follow what we do in Tamil Nadu (In Tamil Nadu PG - by allowing the student to select his option, and in TNPSC - by rolling roster so that a BC candidate is alloted either BC Seat or OC Seat in such a way that he gets the senior most position he will get in either seat) that will be the best.

Any doubts, leave a message at the comment section here

Vettaiyadu Kollathae !!!

At last Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaddu is released. The title of this blog post (Vettaiyadu Kollathae !!! - வேட்டையாடு கொல்லாதே ) is a request to Gautam, a half baked pervert who seems to think that he is the smartest guy in Whole Asia (not even india) as per his interviews to media.

Inspite of the good first half of Kaakha Kaakha (காக்க காக்க) the second half was too gory. Some one would have told him after that movie "Hey Man Gautam, the first half was romantic and youthful and the second half (past intermission) horrible and bloody. Why can't you have both the preinterval and post interval the same".... Well.... he has done that and in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (வேட்டையாடு விளையாடு) he has successfully made both half horrible.

My wife, usually an avid film watcher fell asleep half way. Being the first week crowd (80 % under age 30) the theatre was remarkably silent. I could not help thinking whether this was the same way I had watched Avvai Shanmugi (Thenali, Sati Leelavathy, Vasool Raja MBBS etc) when the theatre will be literally roaring every 2 minutes.

One of the very few comments heard was "தமிழ் படத்தை போடுங்கயா" (Show the tamil movie) as most of the dialogues were in English. Another memorable comment was when Prakash Raj cried before her daughter's body "வழக்கமாக கமல் தானே இப்பிடி பண்ணுவார் இப்ப இந்த ஆளா" Other than that the theatre was silent for most of the time. The only time when the audience burst into laughter was when Kamal said "உன் பொன்டாட்டியா"

My opinion is neatly summed up by http://movies.sulekha.com/tamil/vettaiyadu-vilaiyadu/review/pageno-3.htm

Sat 10 : PM Went to the theater to see a movie suppose to be thrilling
Sat 11:PM Movie Started
Sat 11:01 PM: Got up to see if I am the only one laughing
Sat 11:10 PM: Got up to see if I am the only nodding and shaking my head, all together at the worst back ground noise. Everybody had closed their ears
Sat 11:30 PM. Saw everybody looking at their watch
Sunday 00:00 hours: Whatever happens to an honest policeman in Gautam Menon's movie. Why is the polcieman always a widower

Sunday 1:00 AM; Running to the rest room. Could not take it any longer

Sunday 1:30 AM: Searching for the story
Sunday 1:45 AM : Thrilled and sitting on the edge
Sunday 1:46 AM: Song starts- No one knows why they are dancing

Sunday 2:00 AM: stillw aiting for the story. Everything is over. Movie is over. Everybody going home

Meanwhile we were subjected to relentless chatter about NY, Raghavan Instinct, Crappy editing, shoddy screenplay, Kakka Kakka Hangover; unnecessary songs and jarring background music.
Kudos to Gautam and his team. WHats the worst a director can do??

Plus Points: Are you kidding

Minus Points: Everything.

And one more review (Emphasis mine) http://movies.sulekha.com/tamil/vettaiyadu-vilaiyadu/review/pageno-5.htm

More than a review this is a request to Mr. Gautham Menon to NOT make such detailed movies in future.

The storyline is brilliant, star cast is too good, it has all the good aspects required for a successful movie.

The worst deterrant factor is that the miniscule details that are explicitly told again and again on the big screen about the gory murders. I was sic when I walked out of the theatre.

Only a feel good movie will always fetch repeated audience which is a sure shot way of success. But sorry to say Gautham you have lost the repeated audience.

In your penchant to portray a leaf of the life from an honest cop, you have lost the first time audience to your movie.

Kamal with his subtle performance is brilliant. Jyotika looks awesome. The two killing maniacs are too realistic and that's what is going to keep the audience away from theatres for a second time watch.

Plus Points: The director can be relieved of the Thiruttu DVD scare as this is one movie which many will not want to own.
Minus Points: Will prove dangerous if it inspires the wrong audience.

PS: I could not control myself, when my wife suddenly woke saw the Flashback scene and asked "இது தான் இவர் பொண்னா"

    Hi Mr.Bruno!

go watch chandramukhi one more time and piRappin puNNiyam thEdi koLLungaL!

I respect your critic liberties but it's VERY BIASED one and that can be ridiculed by anybody.

I do not understand how come people like you would have no senses watching Rajini/Vijay and the likes, become all of a sudden so intelligent to advice Kamal/Gautam and the likes - how to make movies??

Why don't you let your conscience live for at least once in a while?!!

Anyway the grand reception that the movie had received proves that people of Tamil Nadu still manage to respect good/sincere movies at least once in a while!!! That's the answer for your stupid view!

    Hi AP,

    Thanks for the comments

I never compared this movie with Chandramukhi.

I compared this movie with Avvai Shanmugi, Thenali, Sati Leelavathy etc. The frustation was not against Kamal. It was against the director who wasted teh talents of Kamal. If you cannot understand this, I cannot help it.

As you have rightly told, this is a movie for guys like Vijay (not even Rajini) and talented performers like Kamal (or Vikram) should not waste their talents acting in such movies.

In your words, piRappin puNNiyam thEdi koLLa watch movies like Pesumpadam or Anbae Sivam and not the works of perverts like Gautam and Selvaraghavan.

    Hello Bruno,
A very biased/tupid review..if a person shows gore in a movie it doesnt mean he is a pervert..If Gautham/selvaraghavan are perverts for such a reason, what about Quentin Tarantino and the likes..Maybe the gore is excessive (but maybe the storty demanded it) but why call someone a pervert for it..
BTW,if your wife really 'slept' during this movie, either please dont take her to another movie,or atleast dont mention it in a review..Its downright stupid..

When we mention the fact that every one was laughing in a movie, I don't think there is anything wrong in mentioning someone sleeping during that.

For example, I never saw any one sleeping in Vasool Raja MBBS or Imsai Arasan 23m Pulikesi

  • Few guys going by the way had a bit of fun
