East or West - Sachin is the Best

From http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2007/jan/29guest.htm

The article given below has been written by Prem Sanjay Vuthandam

We Indians really do not know how to respect or take care of our heroes. Whether it is a saint from the past, a freedom fighter, or a current icon in any industry. We seem to have a problem with successful people. We always are trying to bring down our current stars -- either it's suspicion or jealousy, or whatever other reason, after putting them on a pedestal ourselves! It's a fact.

Take the example of one of our all-time heroes and exemplary sportspersons -- on the field and off it -- Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. He has been forced to single-handedly take care of scoring runs for the past two decades --- not that he asked for the responsibility! Remember, this is a team game! We expect him to score a century each time he steps in to bat! He never claimed to be a "God", as some of us referred to him as in the past. Extremely talented, hard-working genius? Yes, he is all that and then some.

Well, the reason for me writing this article is that I heard all the so-called experts on TV/Newspapers calling for his head, along with many non-experts and the general public at large. So I was wondering if he was really in that bad of form, that he has to be dropped? I pulled up his stats along with all the other Indian batsman who have played at least five games during the 2006/2007 season (including the 3rd ODI against the West Indies in Chennai). Well among all the nine "batsmen", take a look at where the little master stands:

MatRunsHSBatAv10050
Tendulkar14480141*36.9213
Dravid123586332.5404
Dhoni1333662*30.5403
Karthik61136322.6001
Pathan81486421.1401
Raina101313416.3700
Yuvraj56427*16.0000
Kaif6803016.0000
Sehwag101486514.8001

Sachin has played 14 games in all, at an average of almost 37 -- the best among all batsmen this season! His overall career average is almost 44. So, is he really out of form that warrants dropping him??

Then, let's take a look at the rest. Dhoni and Dravid are the only other players who have an average of above 30! And then look at the rest! No wonder India is such a pathetic team!

Now let's take a look at how the current world's top batsmen have been doing the last season.

Sachin vs the rest

MatRunsHSBatAv10050
Tendulkar14480141*36.9213
Ponting1446011138.3315

Hussey14392109*98.0011

Kallis11332119*36.8811
Strauss82105626.2502
Yousuf51537151.0001

The flavour of the day -- Ricky Ponting, the guy who has hit a purple patch, is just about the same average as Tendulkar. Instead, Sachin has scored more runs than him in the same number of games! You don't see Australians calling for Ricky Ponting's head to be dropped from their ODI team!! See all the other players' runs/averages.

Hussey has an average of 98! His average is highly inflated due to the fact he has been not out so many times, as he comes down the order. But he has scored almost 100 runs less than Tendulkar in the same number of games! And no, India has not played minnows like Kenya, Zimbabwe or Bangladesh the past season!

Sachin TendulkarSo my question is: Is Sachin Tendulkar so bad on current form that he needs to be kicked out?? Well, the above stats do not warrant that! Whether we like it or not, he is the best we have! He is a genius, and I personally feel that there are two reasons (assuming he is 100% fit), that he is not doing as well as we expect him to, these days.

First is the fact that he is told to be the "anchor" and cut out most of his aggressive strokes, as he is a senior player and the rest of the team should play around him and Dravid. Well Sachin is in the mould of Viv Richards -- their best form of defence is to attack! Secondly, I think, finally, the weight of the entire nations expectations, and his own, are cowing him down. It's probably getting to him mentally, and he really is under a lot of pressure. That's why, he tentatively prods (bringing the bat down late) and ends up getting lbw or caught inside the circle with half-hearted shots.

The so-called experts, all and sundry, are talking about how "bad" a batsman he is now, and the same impatient/unreasonable guys who are calling for his head will praise him if he scores a century the next game. The two games after that, if he "fails", it will start all over again.

Yes, Indians are emotional people. Remember that Sachin is an Indian too. A self-respecting one, at that. Don't hurt him so much that he decides to call it quits before his time!

How will you call a player who has top scored for his team in 2 out of the three test matches

My Two Seconds of Fame

I have been referred by none other than Shashi Tharoor in his column in the Hindu dated 7th Jan 2007. I had earlier send him the following mail as a feedback of his earlier column in the same paper

To,
Mr.Shashi Tharoor

Dear Sir,

I am a doctor from Tamil Nadu and a regular reader of your columns,

This mail is in reference to
http://www.hindu.com/mag/2006/12/10/stories/2006121000100300.htm

This in reference to your lines
But must the Indian taxpayer subsidise them for seven years to do so? That's the question on which I'd welcome readers' views.

As you have told, i am giving my views

I am a little surprised that even a much learned person like you have been misguided by the "Subsidy". I have given a seperate para about Subsidy below

Now coming to the other points

1. How will a doctor able to run his family for Rs 8000 per month. It is a Myth that Doctors are in short supply in India. The fact is that there are a lot of doctors. The problem is with the Government. (Please See the Government Notification http://www.tnhealth.org/notification/mcdph160106.doc )

2. What has the Indian Government as well as the State Govt done to eradicate Quacks

I am willing to share more facts and Government Orders regarding this, if you are willing to know more about this

Please understand ONE simple fact - No one will want to work in another country for money alone if he can earn enough in India

Myth about SUBSIDY
An engineering college, has many departrments and an administrative office. The administrative office deals with the pay and other functions.
The departments include, Mechanical, Engineering etc in an engineering college and Maths, English etc in an Arts college ( I have no idea about IIM)

The staff include
1. Professors
2. Lecturers
3. Lab Workers
4. Sweepers and Drivers
5. Principal etc

What is the purpose of all these staff... To teach the students......
Suppose students do not join for 5 years........ How much work do these people do..... (You can calculate)

Now come to the budget of the college.
The expenses are the costs involved in
1. Salary
2. Maintenance of the building
3. Papers / Lab articles etc

Now come to the income
1. Fees paid by the students.

Take IIT, IIM or even a government school. Obviously the fees paid is negligible and is about the 5 % of the expenses and the government spends 95 % as a subsidy.

Now come to an UNDERGRADUATE COURSE in a Medical College.

Medical College,as you may know is never a college alone (This is where we differ from the american system of medical school).

By default, it is attached to a Hospital.

A medical college, should have the following departments
1. Anatomy
2. Physiology
3. Biochemistry
4. Pharmacology
5. Pathology
6. Microbniology
7. FM
8. SPM
9. ENT
10. Ophthal
11. Medicine
12. Surgery
13. Paediatrics
14. Ortho
15. OG
16. Radiology
17. Radiotherapy
18. Anaesthesia
19. Dermatology
20 Psychiatry

These 20 departments are must for a medical college. in addition you can have any number of more departments like Urology, Cardiology etc.

All these departments have
1. Professor
2. Assistant Professors
3. Staff Nurse
4. Pharmacist
5. Ward boy
6 Sweeper

in addition the college also has an administrative office. concerned with maintenance of hospital, DRUGS, Equipments etc

Now you see how the budget is used
Expenses
1. Salary
2. Drugs
3. Equipments
4. Maintenance
5. Stationery

Income
1. Fees.
2. Subsidy by the government.

Now comes the important point.

Of the 20 departments, I mentioned, only 3 - Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology are exclusively for Students.

ALL OTHER DEPARTMENTS are for TREATING PATIENTS

Of the expenses invloved, the expenses that are invovlved towards educating AN MBBS STUDENT is the expense of the salary of the staff of the above 3 departments (out of the 20) and the stationery.

ALL OTHER EXPENSES are for treating PATIENTS

In short, government is subsidising, NO DOUBT, but 98 % of the subsidy is for HEALTH and less than 1.5 % is for Education.

But what will you hear. They will calculate the annual expenses and divide it by the number of students and tell that we are spending 22 lakhs for each doctor.

The truth is that EVEN IF A MEDICAL COLLEGE DOES NOT ADMIT MBBS STUDETNS, it will still have 98 % of its expenses for TREATING PATIENTS.

Now come to the Post Graduates..... The government does not even spend that 1.5 % (except for the PGs in the 3 departments I have mentioned).

In other words.....

Let me ask these simple question.

1. What will be the workload of a professor in IIM when students are on strike. Will it increase or decrease
2. What about when a Post Graduate Resident is on strike.

If there are NO STUDENTS JOINING in a course, will you run the course or shut it down. you will shut it down and bring the expenses to ZERO

If you are going to shut down KEM just becasue the PGs are on strike, will the patients allow you.

In other words, is the subsidy the government, WRONGLY AND INTENTIONALLY says that it is giving for Medical Education, a subsidy for educating students or for treating patients.

Treating the patient free or for money is not the theme of this article. I have written this to tell you that the subsidy which we are supposed to get is not for us doctors....... but for the patients

With regards

Bruno

Doctors stage demonstration to take action againts Health Inspectors

From http://www.hindu.com/2007/01/01/stories/2007010107790300.htm

Government and private doctors attached to the Doctors' Association for Social Equality (DASE) staged a demonstration here on Sunday. The urged the authorities to take action against two health inspectors, who allegedly misbehaved with doctors in separate incidents recently.

The agitators said Thangavel, a health inspector, was said to have talked in a threatening manner to Sreenivasan, medical officer at Pandaranvilai Primary Health Centre (PHC), on the PHC premises. Similarly, Terrance, another health inspector, reportedly used unparliamentary language against a government doctor, Pradeep, during a review meeting held at Pudukottai PHC, recently.

The DASE members asked the authorities concerned to take departmental action against the "erring" health inspectors, at the earliest. About 50 doctors took part in the agitation.
